Use the following thoughts and questions to have a spiritual conversation as a family. Don’t emphasize having the right answer, but focus on spending time discussing the Word as a family.
Scripture 1 Kings 17:1-4, 10-24
Session Summary
Elijah was a prophet sent by God to minister to His people during a time of drought and hardship. The drought was God’s judgment on the people after they had begun worshipping Baal, a false god. Even though God sent Elijah, it did not mean Elijah was exempt from suffering. However, God provided for Elijah in both obscure and miraculous ways including through a raven and a widow. In turn, Elijah’s faith was able to reveal the power, the glory and the grace of God when the widow’s son was brought back to life. There is no doubt that God’s grace came through in unexpected ways for both Elijah and the widow.
Conversation Questions
• What are some ways we have seen God provide for our family this year?
• As a family, how do we need to trust God to provide for us in the future? Do we believe He can still perform miracles in our lives?
• How does the way we live and serve those around us point others to Jesus?
• Where and how does God desire our family to serve right now?
Family Challenge
As your family reflects on the ways God has provided this year, write down each way on a separate sticky note. Place it somewhere that will be seen frequently (like your fridge or a hallway mirror) so your family can be consistently reminded this week of how God is faithful and how He provides. Use it also as a reminder to share with others who God can be in their lives. If He faithfully provides for your family, He can faithfully provide for others.
